    Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE)

A palatal expander is a common appliance used during Phase 1 orthodontic treatment for children. The goal is to move the top palate apart to combat crowding and make room for permanent teeth to erupt. At Dr. Mariana Orthodontics in Monroe, WA, some orthodontic journeys begin with a mini rapid palatal expander (RPE) with 3D printed bands. The work done with this appliance can simplify the braces process during teenage years.

How a Rapid Palatal Expander Works

In children, the top palate is malleable and has not fused together yet. It can be separated with the help of an RPE to widen a narrow upper jaw, improve breathing, and help back teeth fit together. An RPE also addresses matters such as crossbite and facial symmetry. The overall goal is to make room for all teeth without pushing or damaging other teeth during eruption.

If a child is a good candidate for an RPE – something that is determined, ideally, around the age of 7 or 8 – this early intervention makes all the difference in the development of a strong, healthy, attractive smile. Here is how a rapid palatal expander works:

    • The RPE is anchored to the upper back molars and stretched across the roof of the mouth.
    • The palate is moved apart over several weeks by turning a “key” daily in the expander. A gap typically appears between the front teeth as the expander does its work.
    • Once the jaw and palate are widened, the expander stays in place for up to 12 months to avoid relapse.
    • Brackets and archwires may be attached to the front teeth to close gaps created by the expander and move teeth to proper locations.
    • Once the expander work is complete, the appliance is removed and a retainer is installed to keep teeth where they belong until it’s time for full braces.

Benefits of a Mini RPE and 3D Printed Bands

RPEs come in different types, and each is customized to the child and the size of their mouth. Every expander is designed to help teeth erupt as closely as possible to the right positions, ideally minimizing the need for extreme orthodontics later.

Here are just some of the major benefits of a mini RPE:

    • Smaller and more comfortable: Conventional expanders aren’t large, but they’re big enough that they take some adjustment. A mini RPE is smaller, less bulky, and more comfortable, taking up less space in the upper jaw.
    • Fixed appliance: Many orthodontic appliances and hardware are fixed to ensure that a predictable, desired movement is reached and never interrupted. The RPE is bonded to a molar on either side of the upper arch using dental cement.
    • 3D printed bands: State-of-the-art technology allows 3D printed bands to be made to the precise right contour of the intended teeth. 3D printed bands for the RPE are simply bonded in place for a great fit and comfort.

Rapid Palatal Expanders Work Quickly and Effectively

RPEs do a lot of important work in a short time, but they also require the wearer and the grown-ups in their life to be dedicated to the job of tending to the expansion work.

    • Clean thoroughly and carefully among all hardware every day. A water pik is a good addition to dental floss efforts.
    • Turn the “key” of the expander exactly as instructed by your orthodontist to ensure the palate opens appropriately and moves consistently.
    • Be patient before, during, and after expander treatment. Expanders aren’t easy to wear at the start. It takes time to get used to the appliance to achieve a straight, healthy smile.
